Gillnet Fishing Vessel BUMBLE BEE 47, Pier 39 Hanthorn Cannery, Astoria, Clatsop County, OR

description

Summary

Significance: Part of an ongoing project to document the evolution of the Columbia River gillnet boat, Bumble Bee 47 is an example of a double-ended sailboat that has been converted to power. Bumble Bee 47 was built for Bristol Bay, Alaska. Bristol Bay boats are similar to the sailing gillnet boats used on the Columbia River but are larger and framed more heavily for the rougher waters of Alaska. It was converted to power by fitting it with a prefabricated iron stern-piece made by Astoria Iron Works.
