description

Summary

Significance: The Children's Sanatorium (Building 6) was built in 1922, as a gift from the Citizens' Aid Society. The building was dedicated to Lenora Hall Christian, who was vice-president of the Anti-Tuberculosis committee for several years. Before her death in 1916, she was active in plans for a tuberculosis children's sanatorium. The building, which cost $160,000, houses 60 children. Two large open-air porches on the south side provided the children with fresh air and sunlight. In 1941, the decline in patient load forced the closing of one floor of this building. In 1943, the Heart Hospital (under the direction of the Minneapolis Board of Public Welfare) was transferred to the children's building; it was discontinued in 1953. In 1959, the entire building was closed to tuberculosis patients. Most recently, the building has been used as a children's day care center.
