description

Summary

Significance: The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway Company (ATSF) was largely responsible for the development of Grand Canyon Village throughout the first half of the twentieth century. The railroad company constructed and owned the majority of the utility infrastructure, as well as buildings, in the village from 1901 to 1954. The ATSF ended its involvement in the tourist industry in 1954 and donated the Grand Canyon utilities to the National Park Service (NPS). The utility system promoted the development of tourism in the park and supported the expanding infrastructure of the village.
