Greenwood Common, Bounded by Greenwood Terrace, Rose Street, and Le Roy Avenue, Berkeley, Alameda County, CA
Summary
A 2016 HALS HEROES PROJECT. The Northern California Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) generously funds a program administered by the Northern California Chapter of the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) to promote the documentation of California's cultural landscapes. The program offers stipends of up to $1000 to qualified persons especially students and emerging professionals to prepare HALS documents.
Significance: As a post-WWII suburban community, Greenwood Common is different from the Levittowns that began popping up across America. In contrast to the Levittown goals of simply providing housing to generate profits in a systematic "cookie-cutter" aesthetic, Greenwood Common was founded on the idealistic sense of community with a modernist aesthetic and an awareness of regional traditions. It was built to feel like a small village rather than a large town.
