Summary
Significance: The La Esperanza's decorated steam engine is the only West Point Foundry beam engine known to survive. It is also the only known 6-column beam engine by any American manufacturer. Additionally, it is one of only eight beam engines of American manufacture known to exist anywhere. It was designated a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1979.
