description

Summary

Photo caption pages & written data include site & floor plans.
Significance: The Henry Schulze House is significant as an example of the 19th century vernacular canal-era housing of Lower Lockport. As collection, the canal-era houses of Lower Lockport exhibit simple design and minimal ornamental detailing. They also share similar two-story, side-gabled massing and a uniform setback from the road. The Henry Schulze House displays these characteristics and is one of the few surviving buildings from the first decade of the canal era. The original Greek Revival style building underwent extensive exterior alterations in the early 20th century, including the addition of the front porch, but retains its ca. 1840 form and massing.
