description

Summary

Significance: Typical example of one of the most frequently built outbuildings of a mountain homestead. // c. 1898. Henry Whitehead, Builder. Oak logs. Square. Logs hewn on vertical faces and joints dovetailed. Split log shelf on the northeast wall. There is no permanent hearth in the smokehouse suggesting that meat was salted rather than smoked here. In case it was to be smoked, a portable hearth such as a tub with a fire of wood chips would be brought in.
