Summary

Significance: Designed and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston district between 1933-36 in conjunction with the construction of the Louisiana-Texas (LA-TEX) intracoastal waterway project, the High Island Bridge Tender's Station was built to facilitate the operation of a railway bridge where the Gulf and Interstate Railway Company's line crossed Mud Bayou near High Island. For more than 30 years resident engineers at the station coordinated and carried out the bridge's movement to allow passage of commercial, military and civilian vessels between the Sabine River and Galveston Bay...
