Significance: It is a National Historic Landmark, an American Civil Engineering Landmark, and the focus of an historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The dam was constructed between 1931 to 1936, and installation of electrical generating units in the dam's hydroelectric power plant occurred from 1935 to 1961. At the time of its completion, Hoover Dam was the highest concrete arch dam in the world. By 1940 the dam's power plant was the largest hydroelectric generating plant in the world in terms of installed capacity. Hoover Dam allowed massive irrigation and municipal water systems to be built in California and Arizona, and electricity generated at the dam's power plant supported WWII war industries and post-war development in California, Arizona, and Nevada...
