Hustings Courthouse, Courthouse Avenue & North Sycamore Street, Petersburg, Petersburg, Virginia
Summary
Significance: This Classic Revival Courthouse, designed by Calvin Pollard of New York and built 1838-1840, is architecturally noteworthy because of its improvisations on, and combinations of, different classical themes on the exterior. On the interior, the original hung plaster ceiling in the second floor courtroom is an impressive feature. During the 1864-1865 siege of Petersburg, Union troops used the tower for a sighting mark and both Confederates and Federals relied upon the clock in the tower as a timepiece.
