Significance: The AVRFS facility was built for the U.S. Air Force to evaluate the impact of gamma radiation on certain packages of instruments related to the fuzing system of guided missile warheads. During the mid-1960s, the American missile program was evolving both offensive and defensive capabilities with respect to guided missiles.
