description

Summary

Significance: Reflects the impact of the 19th century evangelical movement in America, and the use as a setting for a collective religious experience. Camp meetings originated to serve crowds too large for churches or homes. Tents were set up in a circle around a preaching area, called the stand, allowing worshipers to attend revivals that lasted more than one day. Rustic cabins later replaced these tents and a large, roofed, wooden structure with open sides, referred to as the tabernacle, replaced the preaching stand. The meetings served both the religious and social needs of its participants.
