Significance: The International Smelting and Refining Company, a subsidiary of the Anaconda Company, began construction of a copper smelting 9 December 1908. On 25 July 1910 the first fire was kindled by the State Governor, William Spry, and the new Tooele Smelter was turned over to the operating department on 1 October of that same year. 5 months later, on 1 March 1911, construction of a lead smelter was initiated on the same site, the first furnace blowing in 29 February 1912...
