J. Arthur Roy House, 1204 Johnston Street, Lafayette, Lafayette Parish, LA

Significance: The J. Arthur Roy House was constructed in 1901 at the same time as first buildings for Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (later renamed University of Southwestern Louisiana, currently University of Louisiana at Lafayette). The building is prominently located at the intersection of two major streets and immediately adjacent to the university, making it a community landmark. The J. Arthur Roy House is currently owned by the university and occupied by tenants Acadiana Medical Research Foundation and Acadiana Tumor Directory.

The Roy House is an excellent example of Queen Anne style. The two story front gallery, polygonal bays under gables, and decorative panelled band between stories are unique architectural features in the Lafayette area. The house interior features an intricate and elaborate Eastlake-inspired staircase, six mantels, and four scroll-sawn screens. Although some changes have been made to the first floor for business use, most of the building interior retains original features such as wallpaper, wood flooring, light fixtures, and plumbing.
