Jacob Tysen House, 355 Fillmore Street, Staten Island, New Brighton, Richmond County, NY

description

Summary

Significance: In the early 1830s, Judge Jacob Tysen constructed a new house on Staten Island, along Richmond Terrace, facing the Kill Van Kull and nest to Sailor's Snug Harbor, not far removed from its present location. Jacob Tysen, a descendent of Dutch settlers, was an influential citizen and held a number of public offices. After Jacob Tysen's death and the subsequent sale of the property by his heirs, the house was, in the 1870s, substantially extended. The house was acquired by Sailor's Snug Harbor in 1885. It was moved to its present location in 1888, at which time the back porch was probably added. After 1888, the house was inhabited by Sailor's Snug Harbor officials; first, the resident-physician and later the clothing clerk. In 1947, the house was subdivided for double occupancy. Recently the structure has been acquired by Richmondtown Restoration Inc. The building will eventually be moved to Richmondtown, Staten Island, New York to become part of this unique, historic, village complex.
