description

Summary

1993 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
Significance: The John A.G. Davis House, one of two houses located on the estate known as The Farm, stands today as a landmark of the rich history of Charlottesville, Virginia. Situated atop a small hill overlooking the Rivanna River, The Farm has served as headquarters for both British forces during the American Revolution and Custer's Union infantry during the Civil War. The Davis House's elegant Neoclassical details clearly illustrate design principles of early 19th century Federal architecture.
