John Howe House, 341 Hope Street, Bristol, Bristol County, RI
Summary
Significance: Described in the Buildings of Rhode Island (p. 474) as a "taut and simple Federal box that has been animated with superb architectural woodwork," the John Howe House was constructed in 1808. In 1822, when ship captain Benjamin Churchill owned it, the dwelling became known as the "House with Eagles." Tradition holds that sailors from one of Churchill's ship carved the eagles and that he placed the sculptures at the corners of the lattice balustrade of the roof.
