Photograph shows portrait of John Ross, also known as Guwisguwi, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1828-1866 and founder of Ross's Landing in 1816, site of the original settlement of Chattanooga, Tennessee, from which the Cherokee were removed to Oklahoma in the 1830s.
