description

Summary

The contextual study of the lodges built in the national cemetery system was completed for HALS and accompanies the existing HALS photographic survey documentation of the national cemeteries. For Keokuk National Cemetery, please see HALS No. IA-1.
Significance: The Keokuk National Cemetery Lodge was constructed in 1870 following standard plans supplied by General Montgomery C. Meigs of the Quartermaster Corps. This was the standard design for all national cemetery lodges during the late nineteenth century. Of those constructed, over two dozen are known to survive. In 1927 a hot water heating system was installed. In 1931 the present kitchen replaced an earlier kitchen and the stairway was reconstructed in a new configuration. In the 1960's the lodge was renovated with new interior finishes, a new roof, aluminum combination sash, and enclosure of the front porch.
