Laurel Valley Sugar Plantation, General Store, 2 Miles South of Thibodaux on State Route 308, Thibodaux, Lafourche Parish, LA

description

Summary

Significance: Built around 1905 by Barker-Lepine to replace an older structure that had burned, the Laurel Valley Store served the needs of plantation workers as well as others living along the bayou. Here customers could buy their weekly provisions, or waste an hour or two discussing current events. A recently erected partition divides the interior, but stores of this nature rarely made an effort to segregate sales and storage areas. In 1965 Hurricane Betsy knocked this cypress board and batten building off its brick foundation.
