Summary

Significance: Replaced courthouse burned on March 18, 1859. / 1859-60. Gen. Hiram H. Higgins, architect. Brick. 54'-0" x 54'-0" (five bays on each side), two stories. Hipped roof surmounted by three-stage tower with spired belfry and weathervane, four interior end chimneys, bays articulated by pilasters with molded caps and bases carrying full entablature. Central stairhall surrounded on three sides by county offices, large second-floor courtroom with gallery. 1904: one-story brick vault wing added to east side. ca. 1900: renovated, including replacement of original nine-over-nine-light sashes. Demolished 1935 for new courthouse.
