Lehigh Canal, Lock 40, Lehigh Canal where River & Canal turn North, Allentown, Lehigh County, PA

description

Summary

Significance: 22 by 100 foot lock constructed in 1829 by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company. The second of eight locks in the long 11.1 mile Section Seven between Dam 7, a half mile to the north, and the outlet lock at Hopeville. Lift: 7.3 feet. This lock is at the head of the long 2.9 mile level to Lock 41, the longest level on the canal. The lower part of the lock is in good condition. Parts of the wooden mitre gates are still in place, and both the wing walls and bypass flume are intact. A modern steel road bridge has been laid across the lock to provide park access. The upper end of the lock, however, has been sealed shut with concrete and rubble so as to make a spillway.
