Summary

Design drawing executed not later than September 1782 by Antoine Esprit Gibelin shows Minerva (representing France) standing, leaning forward, holding a spear in raised right hand and a shield, with a fleur-de-lis design, in her left hand, preventing a lioness (representing Great Britain) from attacking Hercules who is astride a cradle at Minerva's feet and holding a snake in each hand (representing the victories over General Bougoyne at the Battle of Saratoga "17 Octobre '77" and General Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown "19 Octobre '81").
