Lincoln Home Site, Beedle House, Eighth Street between Jackson Street & Capitol Avenue, Springfield, Sangamon County, IL

Significance: TheBeedle House was probably constructed for William Walters in the early 1840's. Walters was the founder of the Illinois State Register, one of two major newspapers active in Springfield during the Lincoln era. The house was owned for many years by William Walters and his wife, Ann Walters. The dwelling served as income property for them; all the residents during the Lincoln era were renters. In 1860, for example, William Beedle, a railroad fireman on the Great Western Railroad, resided in the house. He rented the property from Ann Walters. The architecture of the Beedle House harmonizes with that of other neighborhood buildings from the Lincoln...The Beedle House and grounds compliment the Lincoln Home. They were an integral part of the urban environment in which the Lincolns and their neighbors dwelled.
