Summary
Significance: Mrs. Harriet W. Dean resided in the Lincoln Home neighborhood from the early 1850's until her death in 1860. Mrs. Dean purchased lot 11 on March 17, 1849. A year later, on March 30, 1850, she secured an adjoining piece of property (the south 20-feet of lot 12) for $125 from Abraham Lincoln. By 1854, Harriet Dean had her home constructed on this land, across the street and to the northwest of the Lincoln Home. Harriet Dean taught school in her home...Mrs. Dean's teaching activities illustrate the diversity of occupations pursued by residents of the Lincoln Home neighborhood. The Dean House constitutes an important part of the historic scene surrounding the Lincoln Home. Mrs. Dean died in 1860, and several changes were made to the building in ensuing years. Among the original features remaining is a handsome bracketed cornice that supports the hipped roof of the two-story frame structure.
