A year later, on March 30, 1850, she secured an adjoining piece of property (the south 20-feet of lot 12) for $125 from Abraham Lincoln. By 1854, Harriet Dean had her home constructed on this land, across the street and to the northwest of the Lincoln Home. Harriet Dean taught school in her home...Mrs. Dean's teaching activities illustrate the diversity of occupations pursued by residents of the Lincoln Home neighborhood. The Dean House constitutes an important part of the historic scene surrounding the Lincoln Home. Mrs. Dean died in 1860, and several changes were made to the building in ensuing years.
