Summary

3rd Place Winner - 2016 HALS Challenge: Documenting National Register Listed Landscapes
Significance: The Lincoln Park Lily Pool is significant to the development of landscape architecture as an exemplary work of the Prairie School style. Designed by prolific landscape architect Alfred Caldwell, the Lily Pool was designated a Chicago Landmark in 2002 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006. It is the most fully realized surviving example of Prairie Style landscape architecture designed by Alfred Caldwell. Constructed by the Chicago Park District between 1936 and 1938, the site maintains its historic integrity today. In the year 2000, the site was renamed the "Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool" in honor of its creator. The site is known by this name today.

The Lincoln Park Lily Pool is significant as an important part of the history of Chicago and the nation, for its exemplification of Prairie Style landscape architecture and the work of prolific landscape architect Alfred Caldwell, in addition to its presence as a unique fixture of the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The Lincoln Park Lily Pool is one of the most significant designed landscapes in Chicago and has been restored to Caldwell's original design. It is one of the most intact remaining examples of Alfred Caldwell's work for the Chicago Park District and is considered one of the truest examples of Prairie style landscape architecture, a style for which Chicago is known. The Lily Pool itself is a feature unique to Lincoln Park Zoo and has provided a respite for Lincoln Park and Chicago residents for over sixty years.
