Summary
Significance: This picturesque Massachusetts seaside village, located at the mouth of the Annisquam River and the Ipswich Bay, was first settled in 1631, During the nineteenth century it was known for its granite quarries and as an artist colony and remains a popular summer resort. The town's name is derived from the Algonquin term meaning "top of the rock."
