Macoupin County Courthouse, Carlinville, Macoupin County, IL
Summary
1992 Charles E. Peterson Prize, First Place
Significance: Designed in 1867 and constructed between 1868 and 1870, the Macoupin County Courthouse in Carlinville, Illinois, dominates the skyline of this central Illinois town of 5,400...Elijah E. Myers (1832-1909), the architect, established his reputation as a designer of town halls, courthouses, and capitols with this commission. Myers, who had apprenticed under Samuel Sloan in Philadelphia, established a practice in Springfield, Illinois in 1863 and received several small commissions before being selected by the Macoupin County Board of Supervisors to design the new courthouse...Despite the large sum expended, the county has not had to invest in new additions, and the courthouse continues to serve its constituents while having required very little maintenance in the end, as a functioning building and tourist attraction, it was money well spent.
