Magnesium is used to make light, strong casting for airplane engines. As insurance against possible shortages of this vital metal, Ford has built its own magnesium foundry. The pot in this photo has just been removed from one of the furnace. This pot holds 100 pounds of the magnesium alloy, which is about to be cast into parts for Pratt and Whitney airplane engines.
