Mahamoku, 5344 Weke Road, Hanalei, Kauai County, HI

Significance: This beach house, given the Hawaiian name "Mahamoku" (Island of Peace), located on the north shore of the Island of Kauai, Hawaii, overlooking Hanalei Bay, was owned by Mabel I. Wilcox, who was assisted by her brother Charles H. Wilcox in its design. The 1,776 acre property consisting of five adjoining lots was purchased by members of the Wilcox family, and Ethel M. Damon, at government auction in Lihue in January of 1914. Sited to enjoy much the same mauka (mountain) view as from her grandparents' Waioli Mission Home, the Beach House and caretaker's quarters/garage were built between September and November of that same year by Sam Itchioka of Lihue. ... Mahamoku was willed by Mabel I. Wilcox in 1978 to the Nuhou Corporation, a non-profit organization managing Grove Farm Homestead Museum, Lihue, Hawaii. During its documentation in September 1987, Mahamoku was placed on the State of Hawaii Register of Historic Places and was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places.
