Summary

Reproduction of drawing shows the massacre of American soldiers at Malmedy, Belgium. Soldiers stand with their arms up in surrender, some already falling to their deaths.
Image published in Drawing fire : a combat artist at war / Howard Brodie. Los Altos, CA: Portola Press, 1996, p. 57, with the accompanying caption: I illustrated the massacre at Malm dy from accounts of survivors: "The outfit was put into one group and a German officer searched us for wrist watches and took our gloves and cigarettes... We were marched into an open field about 100 feet from the road where German tanks were moving by. There were about 150 of us, counting officers and medics. We all stood there with our hands up when a German officer in a command vehicle shot a medical officer and one enlisted man... Then the MGs on the tanks opened up on the group..."
Signed on print: Sgt. Howard Brodie '45.
