Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Boat Shop, California Avenue, west side between Ninth & Tenth Streets, Vallejo, Solano County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: Building 106 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. Building 106 is significant historically and architecturally. Historically, the large (300' x 100') shop was an important part of the ship repair operation at Mare Island. It was called the Boat Shop from the outset, a somewhat generic term that does not define its specific function within the operation. Architecturally, the building is important as a transitional structure, blending 20th century steel-framed industrial technology with a much older neoclassical brick masonry design tradition.
