Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Bomb Shelter, Alden Park on Railroad Avenue, Vallejo, Solano County, CA

Significance: Plans for the construction of bomb shelters were being completed by month's end following the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The following year would see the construction of 100 bomb shelters, 9 air raid shelters, and 8 first-aid stations. The style of these shelters was simple as well as functional. They were just plain flat-roofed, thick-walled, window-less concrete buildings designed to protect personnel from flying debris caused by exploding enemy bombs. Today, the tally of shelters remaining in the historic district is 33 bomb shelters, 4 air raid shelters and 3 first-aid stations. Only two bomb shelters can be found outside the historic district. Building S33-18 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District, have excellent historical integrity with 100% of the original building remaining.
