Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Equipment & Recruitment Storehouse, Waterfront Avenue, northwest corner of Waterfront Avenue & Fifth Street, Vallejo, Solano County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: Building 69 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. The building is important chiefly as an example of the continuing commitment by the Navy to high-quality design and construction in the shipyard. Construction on this brick industrial building was initiated during the Civil War, but the building was expanded on two occasions between 1865 and 1900. Although it exhibits three distinct generations of work, spanning nearly 40 years, the building is integrated structurally and architecturally, a testament to the continuity of design at the base.
