Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Printing Plant, California Avenue, northwest corner of California Avenue & Eighth Street, Vallejo, Solano County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: Building 65 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. It is important as an example of transitional design at Mare Island. It was not a shops building; it was designed for use as an apprentice school. The two-story brick building nonetheless was made to conform with the architectural form and traditions of the mid-19th century shops buildings to the south. The detail of the brickwork of Building 65 reflects a concern on the part of its designer for continuity with the existing buildings along the waterfront, as well as the generally high standards of design that the Navy upheld at the turn of the century.
