Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Quarters 1-2, Cedar Avenue, southeast corner of Cedar Avenue & Seventh Street, Vallejo, Solano County, CA
Summary
Significance: Building 1-2 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. Ten officers' duplexes were built along Cedar Avenue during World War II, of which Quarters 1-2 is a typical example. The duplexes are significant as rare examples of high-quality, permanent housing units built by the military during World War II. Throughout the United States, the vast majority of wartime housing, including officers' housing, was patched together using standardized plans and temporary building standards. Rarely, homes were built to permanent standards during World War II, typically in cases in which it was clear that the base would have a long-term, post-war role to play. These duplexes are rare examples of permanent housing from World War II, a reflection of the importance of Mare Island to the Navy during that period.
