Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Stables, Cedar Avenue, east side Cedar Avenue, north of Fourteenth Street, Vallejo, Solano County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: Building 88 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. It is significant architecturally and as a visual indicator of the antiquity of this naval station. Building 88 is an old stables building, constructed in 1862. It reflects two facts about the 19th century history of this area generally and Mare Island specifically. First, it illustrates how little used was the Shipyard South area until the 1920s. Second, the high-quality brick masonry and Greek Revival detailing of this building demonstrate the care that was taken in the design of even utilitarian building during the early construction program at the shipyard.
