Significance: Building 733 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. Building 733 is significant for its association with the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, or WAVES. In 1944, four buildings were constructed at Mare Island to accommodate a contingent of WAVES. The WAVES were authorized by the Navy Department in 1942. During the war the WAVES became responsible for much of the administration and supervision of the Navy's mail service, radio communications, training, and other non-combat roles. Building 733 is the structure at Mare Island that is most significantly associated with the contribution of the WAVES during the war.
