Maria Mitchell Association, Science Library, 2 Vestal Street, Nantucket, Nantucket County, MA
Summary
Significance: The Maria Mitchell Science Library came into existence in 1902 upon the founding of the association commemorating her as America's first woman astronomer. On July 15, 1920 the first permanent home for the book collection was dedicated. The growth of the collection and concern for its safety led to a 1933 fireproof addition. The simplicity of the library building has a quiet and peaceful dignity that symbolizes the practical nature of its contents and at the same time the character of the woman to which it is a fitting memorial.
