Maria Mitchell Observatory, 3 Vestal Street, Nantucket, Nantucket County, MA

description

Summary

Significance: On July 15, 1908, the Observatory on Vestal Street was dedicated in honor of Maria Mitchell, America's first woman astronomer. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a distinguished educator, Miss Mitchell was a pioneer among America's women scientists. The Observatory, built by the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association (established in 1902), stimulated local interest in science. The success of the Observatory's programs prompted the construction of an astronomical study in 1922, joining the existing facility with the Maria Mitchell Birthplace. Since then, the Observatory has required several maintenance related modifications, but continues to function in an educational and research role.
