Crummell, pastor of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., from 1879 to 1898, spoke out for black liberation and founded the Negro Academy. Here he examines the marriage covenant as revealed in Scripture and, therefore, in God's Law. He discusses and justifies the unequal relationship between the sexes in marriage and divorce contracts (men are dominent and only men can initiate divorce proceedings).
