Mason's Hall, Mason Street, Smithfield, Isle of Wight County, Virginia
Summary
Significance: The "old Masonic temple" was damaged in a storm in the 1910s and demolished in 1953. The lodge replaced it with a purpose-built structure.
The Masonic Hall was built in the 1750s as a school for poor children, and sometime later a second-story was added. The school operated until the American Revolution; at that time, there was no teacher available to instruct the children. After the war, in 1788, the school trustees allowed the masons to have the building.
