Mather Memorial Parkway, Between Northeast Entrance & Chinook Pass, Longmire, Pierce County, WA
Summary
Significance: The Mather Memorial Parkway is a scenic highway which serves as the principal approach road to Mount Rainier from the Puget Sound cities to the north and the Yakima Valley to the east. A cooperative agreement between the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service preserved a timber belt along the road for a considerable distance beyond the north and east boundaries of the park. The scenic motorway is named in honor to Stephen T. Mather, the first Director of the National Park Service.
