Minneapolis Warehouse District, Dittman Building, 20 North First Street, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MN

Significance: The Dittman Building (American Hide and Fur Company) was built in 1913 as an income-producing property by George C. Dittman, a St. Paul eye, ear, nose and throat specialist. Its use in its first four years is not known. The American Hide and Fur Company was a tenant in this building from 1917-35. This company was one of several hide, pelt, and fur dealers that moved onto lower North First Street after Northwestern Hide and Fur Company moved to lower North First Street in 1902. This one-story building is typical of the second-generation brick commercial buildings that replaced the early frame buildings of downtown Minneapolis. The Dittman Building (American Hide and Fur Company) was listed as a contributing building when the Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in November 1989.
