description

Summary

See also HABS UT-36-2 for additional documentation.
Significance: The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints started construction of its Salt Lake City Tabernacle on 26 July 1864, and held its first conference in the immense auditorium three years later. A balcony, added in 1870, completed the building.
Completed when Salt Lake City was still an isolated pioneer settlement, the tabernacle remained the largest auditorium in the state for over a century. The building is the largest existing work of timber roof framing in the United States: an unparalleled demonstration of heavy timber construction, it remains in excellent condition.
