Morris Canal, Inclined Plane 10 West, Phillipsburg, Warren County, NJ

description

Summary

Significance: The Inclined Plane known as 10 West of the Morris Canal is one of the few remaining salvageable planes of the system. The Morris Canal was the first to utilize this system of canal navigation in America. Without the inclined Plane the Morris Canal would have had to overcome the elevational changes with locks. So many locks would have been needed that the cost of the canal could have been driven beyond feasibility.
