Mount Calvary Cemetery, 500 S 13th Street, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, PA
Summary
Significance: Mount Calvary Cemetery, a historic rural cemetery, was established in 1850. Prior to this time, most Catholics in Harrisburg were buried in the graveyard beside Saint Patrick Church, on Church and State Streets. The burials in this earlier graveyard were relocated to Mount Calvary Cemetery to make way for the construction of Saint Patrick's Cathedral (1904-1907). The last available plot was sold by 1920.
The graves within the cemetery reflect the rich history and diversity of Harrisburg Catholics. The design, materials, family names, symbols, and inscriptions of monuments represent a variety of nationalities, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
The picturesque cemetery includes Catholic bishops, priests, and nuns, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, major league baseball players, prominent local businessmen, professionals, and laborers as well as their families.
