Nantucket Lodge No. 66, I.O.O.F., 7-21 Centre Street, Nantucket, Nantucket County, MA
Summary
Significance: Built in the months directly following the fire which devastated this whole section, it is the only five-part Greek Revival building in Nantucket. Sherburne Hall was built jointly by the International Order of Odd Fellows and the first floor shop owners during the fall and winter directly following the Great Fire of 1846. The first meeting in the new hall and the last regular meeting of the month was December 29, 1846. The Odd Fellows were aided by over $6000 in relief funds from mainland fraternities. The first store owners, who built the shops at their own expense, included: N.A. and A.K. Sprague who operated a grocery in the north store by February 1, 1847; John Swain, grocery, by December 14, 1846; Hemon Crocker, grocery, by February 22, 1847; Sweet and Starbuck, boot, shoe, and leather shop (at Number Two Centre Streeet), by June 9, 1847; and H.S. Crocker, grocery (at Number Four Centre Street block). The Odd Fellows purchased the first floor shops during the 1920's and have owned them to the present date (August 1967). Evidence of a fire scarred foundation in the basement indicate that there was an earlier building on the site (probably the Athearn Homestead), part of which was incorporated into Sherburne Hall. An addition, not considered significant to the current study, was built directly behind Shop Number One. Three pilasters, one on the first floor at Shop Two and two on the second floor above shop five, have been removed. Each shop owner has made interior changes.
