New rifled cannon at Washington Navy Yard

description

Summary

Sailor standing behind cannon.
Title inscribed below image.
Inscribed on verso: These guns are cast without runners. They are afterwards fitted to the piece and fastened by the bands that run from breech to the centre, these guns have given proof of great power, throwing a shot across the Potomac 4 1/2 miles-and then burying 6 ft. in the bank. Capt. Dahlgren is still engaged in experiments with these guns, and will doubtless turn them [into] a matchless weapon. NoIII.
Pen annotations change "these guns have given" to "they have given".
