Summary

Significance: The contract to build a bridge across the New River Gorge was awarded to The American Bridge Division of the United Steel Corporation on June 21, 1973 for $11,000,000. The bridge did not open to the public, however, until October 22, 1977. The New River Gorge Bridge is an arch span bridge stretching 1,700 feet across the New River Gorge, and is located 875 feet above the bottom of the gorge.
